The ISC must decide each year whether re-registration is appropriate. It may rule against re-registration if the progress of the work is deemed unsatisfactory due to the doctoral student’s evident “professional inadequacy.” To provide objective evidence in such cases, a probationary period may be organised.

This period, typically lasting two months, involves producing and presenting the results of a set of tasks defined collaboratively by the thesis supervisor, the ISC, and the doctoral school. The purpose is to assist the ISC in making a well-informed decision on whether to authorise re-registration.

A small diagram illustrates the placement of various milestones across two standard timelines (with different start dates), including the potential for probationary periods requested by the ISC to better assess the appropriateness of annual re-registrations in cases of doubt.
